Breaux to Sit Out Louisiana Governor's Race

The Associated Press, over the weekend, reports:
"For me to run now means that we would face a campaign based on an eligibility to run, with the prospects of being in a courtroom only weeks before the election," Breaux said in a statement. "That is not in the best interest of our state or what this election should be about."

Breaux, 63, is a big name in Louisiana politics and likely would have been a strong candidate to replace fellow Democrat Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who announced March 20 that she would not run for re-election.
The big winner out of all this is Bobby Jindal, the Republican Congressman to who narrowly lost to Gov. Kathleen Blanco in 2003. Blanco, whose performance in the aftermath of Katrina was poor to say the least, has announced that she will not run. Breaux, for whom Jindal once worked, would have been the best challenger to Jindal.

That is not to say that Jindal is going to win the election in a walk, but he is in solid position to win.
