Riders Left Haning in Roller Coaster

A power outage at an Arkansas amusement park left about a dozen riders haning upside down on a roller coaster for about 30 minutes before fire and rescue crews could free them.

I have been on a roller coaster when the power went down, one of the most famous coasters around, Space Mountain at Disney World. When the power went out, we coasted to a level area of the track before the auto brakes stopped us. So my question for this case was, why didn't the coaster continue on its way to a more level area? Why did the power going out stop the riders in what is at minimum an uncomfortable position and at worse a very dangerous position.
