"The Bond character will always be anchored in the 1960s and in the values of the 1960s."I agree tht the Bond franchise got quite silly toward the end. But Casino Royale, with Danile Craig as Bond, was a solid movie and certainly not in the vein of prior Bond movies of the Roger Moore/Timothy Dalton/Pierce Brosnan era.
The suave spy was "so anachronistic when you put it in the world we live in today", he said, but added that Bourne was no better or worse than Bond.

"Bond is an imperialist and a misogynist who kills people and laughs about it, and drinks Martinis and cracks jokes," Damon told reporters.
"Bourne is a serial monogamist whose girlfriend is dead and he does nothing but think about her."
He added that Bourne "doesn't have the support of gadgets, and he feels guilty for what he's done".
What I like best about the Bourne movies is that Bourne doesn't rely on gadgets, routinely gets hurt, and actually looks at a map regularly. The Daniel Craig as Bond movies have that potential that makes Bourne so much more likable.

Casino Royale was a good action movie. But was it a Bond movie? Not really. Was it as good as the Bourne trilogy? Not quite. None of the last 20 Bond films has ever been about real life and that was the magic of them. They weren't meant to be. The audience was transported into a world it wanted to inhabit and it had nothing to do with reality. All have been glamourous and unbelievable. It doesn't matter what actor played 007 - the formula was there and people loved it. Nobody complained about Pierce Brosnan during his reign until it was over. There was huge aclaim for his performances; now seemingly nobody can say a good word. Sean Connery, an excellent Bond but again just a parody. Roger Moore's camp performance was outrageous. That's what Bond is meant to be. In the 21 Bond, Casino Royale all has changed. They have discarded the Bond formula and tried to make the franchise "grow up". How do they follow that film? What are they going to do now? Have they actually killed the Bond that millions loved even whilst laughing at the silliness of it all for him to become something just a bit more "normal" and not such good fun. I think they have. My teenage nephew saw CR and said it was a good film but not a Bond film. He was disappointed and fed up. He's 14 - he's the future. I think they may have killed the golden goose.
I thought Casino Royale a fantastic movie. Different than the other bond movies yes, but nonetheless a refreshing change. I am a firm believer that James Bond is not purely science fiction or a hero with supernatural powers but a man who is extremely good at his job, and does if only rarely make mistakes. Also to keep in mind is that this is the first in the bond series, where he is promoted to 007 status, hence he has not had as much experience in the field as some of the later bonds. I enjoy both the bond and the bourne movies for different reasons and i think daniel craig's bond is tough competition for bourne.
