A Commentary on the Maryland GOP

Michael at Monoblogue has a great peice responding to Free State Politics "report" on the state of the Maryland Republican party.

Following last year's elections, the Maryland GOP took a hit. Generally, Gov. Bob Ehrlich was a popular guy, well liked even among my Democrat neighbors, who much preferred the fiscal discipline he imposed on a General Assembly that was all too ready to spend tax dollars but not support any new solutions (like slots--which is now getting more popular). Democrats rule the roost in the state's three largest jurisdictions, the People's Republic of Montgomery County, Prince George's County and Baltimore. But just because the GOP is not big in those counties doesn't mean it is completely out.

I have long advocated that if the GOP wants to win in Maryland, it cannot just focus on the top of the ticket, but also at teh bottom. Far too many times, the GOP simply does not challenge entrenched Democratic candidates, effectively ceding the seat. This is a practice that must stop if the GOP is ever to take back the General Assembly.

On the other hand, Democrats can't get too complacent.
