Soccer (and other sports) and The Law

Professor William Birdthistle has been guestblogging at the Volokh Conspiracy. While Professor Birdthisltle's main fields are business organizations and securities, he is a passionate fan of soccer and has been blogging about soccer and sports internal laws (i.e. the rules of the game) and the refereeing of soccer.

His posts have been fun, with lots of video clips, (including in his first post a clip of a unidentified team being coached on how to take a dive, writhe around as if shot or otherwise gravely wounded). He has published a paper, called Football Most Foul, in which he discusses the poor performance of the referees of the 2006 World Cup and the incentives and disincentives of referees in soccer matched.

His six posts have been fun to read (and watch) and if you are at all interested in soccer or sports and how the rules of the game affect the play of the game, I recommend his posts.
