Brad Friedel has signed with Aston Villa on a three year contract, which for the 37 year old former U.S. International would take him to his 40 birthday. Given that keepers generally have a longer playing life than field players, I generally don't share in the concerns that Friedel won't make it to the end of his contract. Friedel will probably be the starting keeper for much of the season as Brad Guzan (currently on Olympic duty and likely to be called in regularly for World Cup qualifying over the next year) serves in an understudy role. Still, I think Villa Manager Martin O'Neill will get Guzan some playing time.
I still don't know if Guzan's work permit has come through, but I suspect that it will.
